...and I hope you're as impressed by Gus Nyquist as I am. He's become my hero.

Also, here's an interesting stat: Nyquist has scored 22 goals in 27 games. If he kept that pace for an 82 game season, he'd have 67 goals. Holy crap.

Kinja'd!!!

Seems that this guy is also impressed.

The Red Wings are the only sports team I would say I really like (aside from my school, but that's because I have to) but I just can't follow them. I sort of fell back on them after the Thrashers were brutally murdered right in front of me.

I still feel the need to drink heavily this year.

Honestly, though, I haven't even had time to follow them much. I'm kind of mellowing out on pro sports this year. Except baseball.

I didn't have high expectations for the year to begin with; I was just hoping they'd make the playoffs, as the next year would only show improvement with the Wings' wealth in young talent. That being said, if you told me that the Red Wings would sit semi-comfortably in a playoff spot at this point in the year, with Datsyuk and Zetterberg being injured for large periods of the year? I would have laughed.

Back to the future though, the next few years are going to be bright, at least on the offensive for the Wings. Nyquist and Tatar are developing into regular contributors, Riley Sheahan and Tomas Jurco have shown improvement over the year as well. If you've seen Anthony Mantha play in the World Juniors, you'll find even more promise for the Wings; the kid is a scoring machine. The Wings need to find strong second line defensemen (DeKeyser is often injured, and Smith's defensive development still needs work), but they could be dangerous in the next few years.

What all Wings fans need to understand is that we're about a decade due for a major rebuilding year. I still can't figure how we not only have put that off, but have won another cup and made a run at a second. Everyone has to realize that the time will come, within the next 5 years, that we find ourselves in the middle of a very, very bad year. We'll just have to build up, get a couple of unknowns from Europe, and start over. I'd rather that come sooner rather than later, because the more we put off a serious rebuild, the harder we'll fall.

Here's where I disagree (well, kind of). I think you're right in principle; the Red Wings are definitely due for a rebuild, and have been since Lidstrom retired. But I think they've been reloading, and we're starting to see the results of that on the offensive side of the puck this season. Nyquist is tearing the league apart, Tatar looks to be a consistent 20 goal-per-year scorer and a playmaker, Riley Sheahan can be a playmaker as well, Tomas Jurco has great hands, Luke Glendenning and Joakim Andersson are good penalty killers and role players. The Wings have great prospects as well: Teemu Pulkkinen has been a key young player for the Griffins (although that could mean he's a few years out), and look at how Anthony Mantha, at least statistically, has been tearing the QMJHL a new hole .

I think the Red Wings need to sign some defensive free agents (although hopefully not overpay) and cut some of the larger contracts (unforutnately, the Weiss contract looks like it'll bite the Wings in the ass), and they could be fine.
